The Gateway Gators Boys Tennis Team has secured their second WPIAL Class 3A Team Tennis title in just three years, defeating North Allegheny in a thrilling, down-to-the-wire match!
The intense showdown at Washington & Jefferson began with North Allegheny taking a 2-0 lead, thanks to strong performances from their doubles teams. However, the undefeated Gators (12-0) turned the tide with a dominant showing in singles play, sweeping all three matches to clinch a 3-2 victory.
Junior Logan Memije set the tone with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win at third singles. Next, his older brother, Adam Memije, faced off against Advaita Sircar in a rematch of their previous WPIAL singles final. This time, Adam made quick work of Sircar, winning 6-3, 6-0, which put the Gators just one match away from the title.
That match came down to an exciting battle between Gateway’s Zidaan Hassan and North Allegheny’s Evan Kaufman. Hassan displayed incredible grit and determination, battling back from behind in both sets to secure a 7-6 (3), 6-4 victory after two hours of play, sealing the Gators’ championship win.
With this victory, Gateway now boasts three WPIAL boys tennis championships. The team is now gearing up for the state competition on Tuesday, where they’ll face off against a team from PIAA District 3 on their home turf.
Congratulations to the Gateway Gators on their outstanding achievement! >
